The Truth – and the Audience – is still Out There

WonderCon was the arguably the biggest XF2 thing to happen since, well, since the last big XF2 thing happened. It's been talked about in all corners of the Internet -- wait, the Internet does have corners, doesn't it? -- and everyone and their second cousin scored post-panel interviews.

If you need a fix to help you get through your post-con, post-why-didn't-I-get-an-exclusive depression, the XFN team has compiled a not-even-close-to-exhaustive list of some of the best articles and videos, and you can check it out by following the read more link below.

The Truth – and the Audience – is still Out There

Close to 5,000 people crowded into San Francisco’s Moscone Center on Saturday to catch a glimpse of the new X-Files movie, due out July 25.

X-Files stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson appeared in a panel at WonderCon this weekend, along with creator and director Chris Carter and producing partner Frank Spotnitz . The four were featured as keynote speakers at the comic and sci-fi convention to talk about their as yet untitled sequel to 1998’s X-Files: Fight the Future.

“It’ll scare the pants off you,” said Carter, about the new movie. “And you’ll get to see Mulder and Scully again in a whole different way.”

The Fox television series ended in 2002, after a 9-year run. Spotnitz, who co-wrote the movie with Carter, said he was “surprised at how quickly [he] reconnected with the characters” after several years had passed.

Gillian Anderson, however, found it a little more difficult to slip back into the role of Dana Scully. “I just sucked,” Anderson lamented. “I sucked for a good 48 hours.”

Duchovny’s biggest challenge, he said, are his scenes with Anderson.

“I put so much more weight on Mulder/Scully scenes emotionally to be the heart of the movie, that going into them I just feel more expectations,” he said. “There’s more riding on that.”

The X-Files is known for its plotlines about supernatural phenomena, but much of the show revolved around theories of government conspiracy. The new movie had been long delayed because of a well-publicized internal lawsuit, but Carter said the delay may have also reflected a previously unwelcoming political climate.

“I think we ended the show right about the right time,” he said. “There was a big change in the country after 9/11, but I think now coming back, things have settled a little bit and I hope that the mood is right and the appetite is right,” he said.

The new movie also stars Amanda Peet, Xzibit, and Billy Connolly. Beyond that, Carter says, all other information is being kept secret.

Fans were treated to a short teaser of quick cuts, dark music, and gruesome imagery, but little else divulging a plot. Spotnitz offered only a vague summary of what is to come.

“We’ve been freed to tell the best story we could think of about [Mulder and Scully] and where they are in their lives,” he said.

Although it has been 6 years since the series ended and 10 since the last movie, Duchovny, Anderson, Carter, and Spotnitz were hopeful that their new project will be well received.

“We are working blind right now,” Carter said, “hoping that there’s a big audience and that we can make more movies.”

Duchovny echoed Carter's sentiments and thanked the crowd.

“It's very nice to see you guys here. We thought you were still out there, and we’re convinced now that you still are,” he said.

This article and its accompanying videos can be found here at IESB.net.

Gillian Anderson, Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz spoke with IESB's Silas Lesnick following their panel at WonderCon this weekend in San Francisco.

The film's timeframe, continuity, mythology and more are covered! Plus, David Duchovny pops into Gillian's interview for a quick cameo!

And don't worry, the new film has a title, it will not be X-Files 2, just as the 1998 film was subtitled Fight the Future, this new film will also have a subtitle...

Also, Chris Carter answers the questions, will there ever be a Millennium film? Will Lance Henrickson appear in this X-Files film?

 X-Files 2 Trailer InfoSource: IESB.net

The panel is still currently going on and we will be speaking exclusively with David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Frank Spotnitz and Chris Carter shortly but we wanted to give you this quick description of what was just shown during the X-Files panel.

The footage, most likely the trailer begins in a field of ice and snow, there is a team of 30 people (FBI Agents or Police) walking in a horizontal line, there lead by crazy looking man with long white hair (played Billy Connolly). They get to a certain point in the ice and Billy's character points and says "it's here".

Then we get quick shots of Mulder and Scully running, other shots of something that might be tomb underground, there are other shots of other FBI Agents including Amanda Peet, then we see Billy's character again, possibly in a pit with blood coming out of his eyes.

Then the release date.

Chris Carter did reveal that Amanda Peet plays a special Agent named Dakota Whitney.
